This morning 12/15 the Help Desk has received a number of calls from users indicating the McAfee Antivirus detected and deleted a virus. This has been researched by Information Resourses and identified as a false positive by the antivirus software. This message will only be displayed if the computer you are using is running Windows XP. This does not occur on Windows 7 computers. A fix has been put in place but may take a few hours to propagate to all systems across campus. If you see this popup message just close the message box and hit cancel to the file restore prompt. This will clear the message and the system will run normally. If you still have questions or concerns you can contact the Customer Support Help Desk at 913-588-7995.

Microsoft Office Work At Home Rights

Did you know that as a KUMC employee you can get Microsoft Office 2010 for your home computer at a greatly discounted cost? Under the Microsoft Work-At-Home program, all KUMC employees are eligible to buy one copy of Office 2010 at a greatly reduced price. To get your copy, log in to my.kumc.edu and then select the "Computing" tab. Then click on the link "Purchase Microsoft Office." That will take you to a special Microsoft website. Be sure to write down our program code. The program code can be found once you log in to my.kumc.edu.

Outbound Internet Mail Delayed - Resolved 8:45pm

Outgoing email to the Internet was slow leaving the Medical Center between approximately 6:30pm and 8:30pm due to a looping rule.  As of 8:45pm the issue appears to have been resolved and all outgoing mail processed.

New Events Calendar

A new events calendar is now available on the KUMC web site: http://www.kumc.edu/events-calendar.html.

It offers easier ways to download event information to your computer, mobile device, or social networking site of choice, options to be notified of changes to events, and you can even set up text message reminders.

For those signed up to receive weekly alerts from the calendar, you will no longer automatically receive them. To re-subscribe, go to the Events Calendar, and select the Subscribe button.

Web Statistics for SharePoint

SharePoint site owners can now view statistics on activity in their sites. If you've updated your site to the 2010 look and feel, you can access your statistics at any time by going to Site Actions > Site Settings > Site Web Analytics Reports.

Note that statistics are only available if you've updated your look and feel to 2010 (from the 'classic' 2007 version).

New Search Engine on kumc.edu

A new version of the search engine on www.kumc.edu was released today. We replaced the Google mini search appliance for a hosted Google index of our site. Among the improvements:
  • Faster search results
  • Uses the latest Google search algorithms to provide the most relevant results
  • Thumbnail photos of the page appear next to results
  • One search also brings results from the online phone directory in the righthand column
We're continuing to fine tune the filters, synonyms, and keyword matches. Please contact Jameson Watkins at jwatkins@kumc.edu if you find any odd results.

Phone Service - MOB, Hemenway, Taylor & Westwood

Users in these buildings may be experiencing a problem where telephones are not obtaining dial tone or fail to ring. Engineers are aware of the problem and will be implementing a fix at 10AM today. At 10AM, your phone may reset. Once the phone is reset, the problem will be corrected.

Random Email going to Junk Mail folder

We have received a few reports today that some email is going to the GroupWise Junk Mail folder when the email is clearly not junk mail.  We think the issue was due to a corrupt configuration file.  If you receive any new email (dated any time after 6:40pm on 10/31) in the Junk Mail folder that should not have been placed there, please contact the help desk at 913-588-7995.

Information Resources discovered that some external email was incorrectly being directed to the GroupWise "junk mail" folder instead of the "in-box". Users missing email should check the "junk mail" folder prior to contacting the Helpdesk. The issue had been resolved.

IE 7 Upgrade to IE8

Microsoft is no longer supporting IE7. Starting tomorrow (10/26/2011) all Windows XP machines that have IE7 (Internet Explorer) installed will be upgraded to IE8. The upgrade will happen "behind the scenes" while your computer is idle. When the upgrade is completed, users will be asked to save all open work and restart your computer for the upgrade to be finalized. If you have any problems, contact the Helpdesk at 8-7995.

Error on main KUMC website www.kumc.edu

At 10:06am today10/21/2011 an error was reported when accessing the main KUMC website www.kumc.edu IT is aware of the issue and is currently working on it.

By 11:15am on the 21st it appears our instability issues across the kumc.edu web site have been resolved. We're continuing to monitor closely throughout the day.  We apologize for the inconvenience.

Novell Messenger Now Available Without VPN

You can now use the Novell Messenger instant messenger client without having to first engage KUMC's VPN system. The Novell Messenger ties directly into the GroupWise address book and email client, and provides secure live communication with colleagues at KUMC. Links to download Windows, Mac, and Linux clients are on the Computing tab of myKUMC.

Content Mgmt System Update, 10/21

At approximately 7am on Friday, Oct 21st, we will be upgrading the Ingeniux content mgmt system to a new version. Users of www.kumc.edu should not experience any downtime, but some subdomains such as pa.kumc.edu or salina.kumc.edu may experience up to 15 minutes of downtime between 7am and 8am.

Users of the CMS will be contacted directly with info on the updated user interface and other enhancements, but please contact Jameson Watkins at jwatkins@kumc.edu or x87387 if you have any specific questions.

The backlog of  email to blackberry users at the Medical Center appears to have been cleared over night.

RIM (Research in Motion) is currently working on an issue causing intermittent service to Blackberry’s across the country.   The Medical Center appears to be affected by this outage.   We will update the blog once we confirm that the issue has been resolved.

Intermittent Inbound Email Delay

It was determined midday Wednesday, Oct 5th, that the Medical Center was experiencing issues with hardware causing delays in a portion of our inbound email from the Internet beginning on Monday, Oct 3rd, but are uncertain on the exact time.
 
The issue has been resolved, and all delayed email was processed by early Wednesday evening.

New "kumc-guest" Wireless

To increase wireless (WiFi) security for the KUMC community, Information Resources has launched a new guest wireless network. The name of the wireless guest network is simply "kumc-guest". Use of this network will require a brief registration process before University visitors and guests can gain access to the internet and other public KUMC resources.

KUMC employees and students are encouraged to use the secure wireless network called "kumc-secure".

Information Resources has recently updated the wireless networking web site to include more instructions and documentation on how to connect devices to the secure wireless network. That web site can be found here.

Over time, the current unsecured or guest wireless network with the name "Internet" will be phased out.

CAS Login Issues

We're experiencing problems with our security certificates that connect our identity management servers to our applications, resulting in error messages when trying to view certain authenticated resources like ANGEL and myKUMC.

We're working on the issue and hope to have it resolved shortly.
